Mat Pilates vs Equipment Pilates — What's the Difference?
Mat Pilates vs Equipment Pilates — What's the Difference?
If you've been looking into Pilates classes and found yourself wondering why some happen on a mat and others involve what looks like a very elegant piece of gym equipment — you're asking exactly the right question. The two approaches share the same foundations, but they feel quite different in practice. Here's what you need to know.
What they have in common
Both mat and equipment Pilates are rooted in the same principles — controlled movement, breath, alignment, and building strength from the inside out. Both are suitable for beginners, both can be adapted for injuries or limitations, and both will leave you feeling stronger and more connected to your body over time. The method is the same; the tools are different.
Mat Pilates — movement with just your bodyweight
Mat Pilates uses your own bodyweight as resistance. Sessions take place on a padded mat, occasionally with small props like resistance bands or Pilates balls. It's accessible, requires no specialist equipment, and is a brilliant way to build core strength, improve posture, and develop body awareness.
At Nutrio, our mat Pilates classes are led by experienced, specialist-trained instructors who bring a deep understanding of how the body moves and responds. Classes are kept small so there's always room for individual guidance.
Equipment Pilates — supported, precise, and endlessly adaptable
Equipment Pilates uses specialist apparatus — most commonly the reformer, but also the Cadillac, chairs, and barrels — to add spring-based resistance to your movements. This resistance can assist or challenge depending on how it's set up, which makes equipment Pilates uniquely adaptable. It can be gentler than mat work for someone recovering from injury, or significantly more demanding for someone building strength and control.
The equipment also gives your teacher immediate feedback on how you're moving, which makes sessions highly precise. At Nutrio, our 1:1 equipment sessions are where the physiotherapy and Pilates sides of what we do come together most naturally — particularly well suited to clients working through rehabilitation, managing a long-term condition, or wanting a truly personalised movement programme.
So which is right for you?
For most people, the honest answer is both — and ideally in that order. Mat Pilates is a wonderful place to start, building your foundations and getting comfortable with the method. Equipment work then adds a new dimension, deepening your understanding of your own body and allowing for much greater precision.
If you're recovering from an injury or have been referred through physiotherapy, starting with 1:1 equipment sessions is often the better route — your programme can be built entirely around your needs from day one.
